48999ee671 * Some more clever elide mode for the LyX buffer tabs. In trunk 
currently the whole path is (possibly with some unmotivated ... in
  the middle) used which is usually far too long.

  The algorithm implemented here will start with absolute paths. From
  left to right path segments are added to the display string if they
  help to make the display strings more unique. Otherwise nothing is
  added, or if some middle path segments are omitted otherwise, three
  dots ... are used.

  The result is that we get just the base filename without extension if
  they are unique in the tabbar.

  The patch is open for discussion. If there is demand we can create
  yet another preference option to get back the old behaviour.

2090c47bfa * in the very uncommon case the header is inserted into plain C code... The cleaner solution maybe would be to rename assert to lassert.h to avoid the clash with the system assert.h

5cadecf3f6 Remove embedding stuff from InsetBibtex. 
There might be some header cleanup that can be done here, or some uses of forward declarations and such. This was pretty quick and dirty, just to get it done.

69de04feac Restore Andre's TextClassIndex, but now in the form of BaseClassIndex. It seems worth distinguishing more clearly than we do at the moment between TextClass's and BaseClass's. The latter correspond to *.layout files; the former are based upon *.layout files but may be modified by modules.

2e7d1199df Revert 23154. 
Sorry, Andre, but this broke not only the modules stuff but the general handling of TextClasses. I'm not opposed to doing this sort of thing, but it's going to be a little more complicated. I'll do it when I get a bit of time, or I can explain what the issue is here if you want to do it.

I'll separately re-commit some of the cleanup here.

1a7b7f6541 Fix some problems in makeAbsPath(): 
i.  It didn't handle a leading "~"
ii. It wrongly handled a string of ../../etc when this took us back to the root directory.
Fix for (i) borrowed from expandPath(). The other is just logic.

1741c87a4e Fix bug 4463. The crash was due to a call to X from inside a child process. 
The main change is to support/ForkedCalls.{h,cpp}. We introduce a static variable IAmAChild and a corresponding accessor. This is set to true in a new fork() method, in the branch taken by the child. (Note: fork() is safe cross-platform, as it just returns -1 if we don't have fork().) This ForkedProcess::iAmAChild() method is then used to protect GuiView::message().

As Abdel has pointed out, there may be other such calls to be protected, e.g., the emission of the Buffer::changed() signal. Those are not addressed here.

58729e1117 Following rev 21967: final touch to odocfstream: 
- odocfstream: properly fix plaintext output by getting rid of ctor with std::string argument as this can be mixed up with std::ofstream(std::string) ctor where the argument is a file. UTF8 is now the default encoding.

efbd1d30cb Sanitize the way we use abort() and exit(). With this commit, we should never crash in release mode, even when assertions are enabled. In debug mode, we crash with abort in order to get a useful backtrace.

c886bc68c2 * FileName: 
- introduce changeExtension(): the goal is to replace progressively the one in filetools.cpp
- get rid of internal_path() checking for Win32 as the path is always normalized with slashes with QFileInfo.

* BufferParams: get rid of filepath member. This was used only once and was fixing a path in BufferParam was wrong anyway.

* Buffer::filePath(): always regenerate instead of caching it in BufferParams.

c23db901ec Getting rid of normalizePath() which is unneeded for FileName purpose (the path is always normalized internally). This commit frees up src/ from boost::filesystem. Some remaining references stays in src/client and src/tex2lyx.

067e21046f Fix bug that files with nonascii filenames are always reported 
as externally modified.

	* src/Buffer.cpp (Buffer::readFile): filenames are always stored
	as UTF-8 in the FileName class.

	* src/support/FileName.h: correct comment.

4a35906da7 Fix problems with odocstream on "exotic" systems caused by the strfwd gimmick. 
* src/support/docstream.{cpp,h}:
	Move insertion operator for char types from docstream.h to
	docstream.cpp and compile it only when USE_WCHAR_T is not defined.

	* src/support/strfwd.h:
	Implement forward declarations in standard C++ way.
