The default behaviour of git for text files is to store unix line endings in
the repository, and to convert to native line endings in the local workspace.
This plays well with the LyX behaviour of storing files in native line endings.
Unfortunately it may break if files are sent around by email and submitted on
a different OS than the one they were last saved, and this did probably happen
in 6b0632eea.
Pdflatex is the recommended export tool for the manuals.
Pdflatex brings the best results for hyperlinking.
Some features (e.g. rotated text) are not available in DVI or PS (dvips).
This does not affect export from command line or autotests
(where this setting is ignored and the format must aways be given explicitely).

dvipdfmx emits a lot of warnings and Koji suggests ps2pdf.

Note that on Debian, I installed the following packages
to be able to compile with ps2pdf:

fonts-ipafont-nonfree-jisx0208
fonts-ipaexfont-mincho
The rest (Tutorial.lyx, Math.lyx, EmbeddedObjects.lyx, UserGuide.lyx,
Intro.lyx and Additional.lyx) are left untouched, because
still not compilable with platex
- uniform formatting, clarifications, simplifications, updates, added missing information
- German Customization.lyx: also translations, added missing information that is already in the other language versions
- Italian Customization.lyx: use the same document settings as the English version
- Additional.lyx: revert undesired change from last commit

- some intro cleanups and fixes to have an uniform layout for all language variants
- remove some obsolete text from Polish and Basque Additional.lyx versions
